Sony’s New RX100 Compact Camera Marvel
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 Digital Compact Camera is the first high-end compact that Sony will release in 2012, and it packs quite the imagery wallop. With an impressive set of features, specs, and full manual capability, this camera is set to take on the Olympus X-Z1, the Panasonic LX5, and the Canon S100 and it will clearly out perform them all.
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 will have Carl Zeiss optics with a T* coating and a super-fast aperture of f/1.8 (at the wide angle) with a great reach of 3.6x (28-100mm equivalent). It will have a classically sleek and minimal design, all while retaining some wonderful ergonomics and the intuitive manual control of the front ring on the lens. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 also sports a function button for programming to suit the individual photographer’s control tastes.
With all of these physical nuances it sounds fine and dandy, but what about the internals?
The sensor in this tiny wonder is what really takes the cake. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 has a sensor that is about 4x the size of sensors found in most cameras this size, and equals the sensors for the Nikon J1 and V1 compact mirrorless cameras. This sensor is also larger than all three of it’s closest competitors: the Panasonic LX5, the Olympus X-Z1, and the Canon S100. Not just having a larger sensor was enough for Sony though, they also bumped the megapixels up to a whopping 20.2MP and it utilizes the same BIONZ processor as their prosumer a77 DSLT camera. All of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 features combine together into a point and shoot compact that is capable of full HD video and fantastically rendered still images.
