Karen Dickey

Karen moved to Austin 22 years ago from Arizona. She was mainly an editorial photographer; people, agriculture, children, animals and weddings. A former member of the ASMP, she had been active in the local chapter for years.

She tragically died in the summer of 2010 in Costa Rica of an apparent stroke.

Karen Dickey was a great photographer and friend to all of us at Precision Camera and to the entire Austin photo community. Life’s harsh reality sometimes seems to strike so unfairly at those who we love the most. Can’t we all name several others who deserved her fate so that she might have been spared? If Karen would have had a say, I’m sure Rick Perry would have been tops on her list. I’ve know Karen forever it seems. First as a customer and rapidly thereafter as my friend. I remember helping her keep her darkroom equipment working down at the Texas Agriculture Commission where I first learned to admire first her work and then the lady. What a wonderful person she was. If one word comes to mind to describe Karen, sweet is my choice. Kind, cheerful, talented, hardworking, fair-minded and simply wonderful also want to crowd in there. She and Pepper always brought a smile to my face. I will miss Karen, the sun will not shine quite as bright on this world without her beautiful presence.

    Rest in Peace Karen.

I too knew Karen for many years. I met her soon after she came to Austin many years ago. I worked with her in the Austin ASMP chapter and found her to be the most dependable person I knew. When Karen said she would take care of something it got done.

From working with her in ASMP our friendship deepened so when my wife and I had our daughter Karen and Pepper were around her from the start of her life. Karen was actually the only person our daughter Elista stayed overnight with until her teenage years. She would always ask Karen to show her the same two videos – The Three Amigos & Ghostbusters – whenever she was over and Karen did. Our daughter was very afraid of dogs yet loved to see Karen and Pepper.

Our family was so thrilled when Karen and Gary got together and, while we missed her, were equally happy about their Costa Rica adventures. The images she send in her emails were some of her best, I believe because she was so happy.

Our family will always miss her but she will always live in our hearts for the rest of our days.
