Sneak Peak of the New Olympus m.Zuiko 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens

Our rep from Olympus stopped in today to demo the new 60mm macro lens that they are releasing to accent the wonderfully full Micro FourThirds lens lineup. It is a pre-production sample and so I will not be able to give you any sample images from the lens, but I do have a few of the lens and some remarks about how it handles and what I am looking forward to with it as well. I only had this lens for a whole two minutes so my remarks are to be taken with a grain of salt. I did not have the time to really put it through some paces and understand fully how it works, but here’s the sneak peak anyhow:

This lens is awesome. It has a great build quality with responsive AF and very quick macro focus. The lens focuses down to 1:1 at a distance of 0.19m. There is a 1:1 macro lock function that can be accessed by holding the magnification selection dial to the setting during the focusing, and then is held there until you refocus and it resets itself to the normal focusing mode. The 60mm (120mm in 35mm equivalent) makes for a wonderful close up image that is tight and a focus area that is very well separated from the fore- and background. This lens really is a joy to use in the short time I had it in my hands, but I am looking forward to providing a more in depth look at it when it is released and we have a copy to demo further. If you would like to check it out yourself  Charles, the Olympus rep, is in store with the Olympus 60mm Macro on display (along with a whole slew of other m4/3 cameras and lenses) for today and tomorrow and will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the lens or the Olympus system of photography equipment.

So you have to hold the selection lever every time you want to focus to 1:1?  Please tell me that’s not the case (that would be awful).  Honestly, that alone would make me keep my Panny 45/2.8 for sure.

It does macro focusing to 0.19m from infinity easily (0.4m to infinity if you want quicker focusing all around), but to move in closer than that you will have to select with the toggle switch to move in to the 1:1 range. Since you will not typically be shooting macros that close without taking your time composing and lining up it’s actually a much more practical workflow than you think. Now this is a pre-production model, so keep in mind that things might change in between now and when the lens is released. Hopefully the larger review sites like DXOmark and Dpreview get ahold of this lens soon to run some thorough tests on it for definitive answers to all of our questions. Thank you for your interest, and I look forward to providing more info to you guys as we receive it!

I wish I were in Texas…. I would drive there to see this lens perform.    The PL45 is a good lens but sometimes struggles focusing from non-macro distances to macro…. closeup flower versus background.   How do you think Oly 60mm compares to PL45 in this regard?  How is the focus sharpness of this lens?  Also can you comment on size and weight difference?

I unfortunately do not have a Panasonic Leica 45mm Macro-Elmarit to compare to the new Olympus 60mm macro on size and weight or on focus speeds. In the short time I did have it in hand to play around with, it had no trouble achieving focus all the way down to 1:1 and then pulling back out quickly to normal distances. The lens was very accurate in focusing down close without hunting. The new Olympus macro is a very solid lens with a balanced weight to it. The lens mounted on the OM-D is a very well rounded setup. The model I had in my hands was pre-production so I was not able to perform sharpness tests that would be definitive. Thanks for the interest and I hope to have a model in hand soon to fully test out for you guys!

Exactly what I was trying to say but oh so much more concise, thank you.
